Donny McCaslin

Donny McCaslin (sax); Jason Lindner (keyboards); Tim Lefebvre (bass) & Mark Guiliana (drums)

McCaslin has been a talked-about presence in New York jazz circles since the early 1990s, when he was playing with Gil Evans and in the fusion group Steps Ahead, and beginning his long association with Maria Schneider. With 11 albums and three Grammy nominations under his belt, he became a household name in 2016 when he collaborated with David Bowie on what was to be his final album, Blackstar.

The music McCaslin makes is ambitious but accessible. It’s unapologetically the work of someone who grew up listening to rock on the radio. And with recent albums including covers of Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada, he’s bringing influences from electronic music into the mix too. This is the new face of jazz fusion, following in the footsteps of pioneers like Weather Report and Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters.

Early booking advised.

This is the powerful left-field New York jazz band that played on David Bowie’s Blackstar, fronted by saxophonist Donny McCaslin, a sought-after improvising jazz saxist with a rugged post-Coltrane sound. His dedication to Bowie represents that niche of rock and hip-hop-influenced jazz that is rooted in the accumulation of repeated hooks against rhythm-section crescendos of rising heat. A formidable set with a darkly seductive power.” – The Guardian
