Hull Jazz Festival Winter Edition

13-16 November 2019

Our winter jazz edition for 2019 focuses on incredible stories told through jazz - and we have some extraordinary tales to tell!

Cuban virtuoso violinist Omar Puente brings his Havana friends to fill the stage plus special guests Alex Wilson, Dennis Rollins and Naomi Phillips, to celebrate the life of his wife Debbie Purdy in true, upbeat Latin style!

British-Bahraini trumpeter Yazz Ahmed presents her new work for her big band Polyhymnia, inspired by courageous and influential women including Malala, the suffragettes and Rosa Parkes.

On the subject of extraordinary women, we’re proud to celebrate the amazing contributions that local Hull heroes Lyn Acton and Vicky Foster have made to the city, while US actor-singer Apphia Campbell brings us her acclaimed West End, New York and Edinburgh hit Black is the Color of My Voice,  inspired by the great Nina Simone.

Lovers of supergroup Supertramp won’t want to miss sax man John Helliwell. He’ll be leading a big band featuring some of the North's finest players, performing the unforgettable music of the legendary band as you’ve never heard it before.

There’s a special Euro-Netherlands theme to this edition. Ikarai tell the daring story of Muhammad Ali and Joe Frasier’s famous Rumble in the Jungle, while star Dutch vocalist Eva Scholten performs her tribute to the great Django Reinhardt.

Finally, we welcome back local favourites Numb Mob and the Broken Orchestra who explore the hidden stories of Hull. And we join forces with the local Music Hubs to launch a new Jazz Academy for young people, in association with National Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Tickets for all shows are available now from Hull Truck Theatre online, in person at the box office or by calling 01482 323638.
